NHIAA Tournament Roundup: Campbell advances in Div. III softball


Campbell of Litchfield advanced to the quarterfinals of the NHIAA Division III softball tournament with a 9-0 win over No. 18 Bow on Friday.

Second-ranked Campbell will host No. 7 Stevens of Claremont on Monday at 4 p.m.

On Friday, Campbell (16-1) scored one run in the first inning and three in the second before exploding for five runs in the third to blow the game open.

Emily Paquin (two hits, three RBIs), Brittany McNulla (two hits, three RBIs) and Shelbie Trompke (two hits) led Campbell’s offense.

Bow (7-11) got two hits from Kate Zasilla and loaded the bases in the fifth inning, but Campbell turned a double play to end the threat.

Franklin 4, Berlin 2: Eighth-seeded Franklin scored twice in the second inning thanks to five walks to take a 3-1 lead and added an insurance run in the fifth frame when Mariah Gauthier walked, stole second base and later scored on an Amber Vogt single.

No. 9 Berlin was able to score one run in the seventh, but could pull no closer. Kelsey Bird struck out four and earned the win for Franklin, which will next face top-ranked White Mountains Regional of Whitefield on Monday at 4 p.m.

Pelham 3, Newport 2: Eleventh-seeded Pelham upset No. 6 Newport behind the efforts of pitcher Jordan Parce, who allowed five hits and got the scoring started in the first inning with a safety squeeze bunt to score Kelsey Grimard (two hits on the day).

Hannah Paitchel (two hits) slugged a two-out triple to score Olivia Poff (two hits) and make it 2-0 in the fifth.

With the score 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh and Newport threatening with runners on base, Parce notched a strikeout to close the game. Sophie Willis had three of Newport’s five hits and pitcher Stephanie Carl had a solo home run in the sixth to make it 3-1.

Gilford 3, Prospect Mountain 0: Senior pitcher Sydney Strout pitched a no-hitter and struck out 18 batters to lead No. 3 Gilford past No. 14 Prospect Mountain of Alton.

Gilford got its first run in the first inning when Strout hit a triple and courtesy runner Kristina Hayden scored on a Lisa Osborne fielder’s choice. Gilford got its other two runs in the bottom of the third with two outs, knocking three straight singles to score the runs.

Abby Harris went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Gilford (16-1) and Sarah Lachapelle went 2-for-3. Prospect Mountain ended 9-9.
