Berlin native Gendron is new Maine ice coach

The University of Maine introduced Dennis “Red” Gendron as its men’s hockey coach Tuesday.

Gendron, a 55-year-old Berlin native, replaces Tim Whitehead, who was fired after 12 years as Maine’s head coach.

Gendron spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Maine under Shawn Walsh, and was with the Maine program when it won the 1993 national championship.

Gendron spent the last two years as an assistant coach at Yale, which won the national title earlier this year. He has also served as an assistant coach at the University of Massachusetts, and with the NHL’s New Jersey Devils.

Gendron was a three-year captain when he played hockey at New England College in Henniker.

Whitehead posted a 250-171-54 record at Maine. He guided the Black Bears to the national championship game as the program’s interim head coach after Walsh died of cancer in 2001.

Maine made four Frozen Four appearances and reached the national championship game twice under Whitehead.
