Manchester bishop announces collection for victims of Oklahoma tornado

Bishop Peter A. Libasci is asking Catholic parishes across New Hampshire to take up a free-will offering the weekend of June 8-9 to support recovery efforts in Moore, Okla., following last week’s tornado.

Donations collected will also benefit other disasters that may affect the country during the 2013 storm season.

The offering will support the efforts of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and Catholic Charities, USA, the official domestic relief agency of the U.S. Catholic Church, as they respond to emergency and rebuilding needs, as well as to the pastoral and reconstruction needs of the Church.

Bishop Libasci said, “I encourage all Catholics in New Hampshire to help our brothers and sisters in the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City during this painful time. We do not know when natural disasters will strike, but we can be prepared to offer immediate help when they do.

“The generosity of the Catholic people of New Hampshire is evident by the strong and generous response shown following tragic events in recent years. May our humble efforts bring some comfort to those affected, and—most importantly—may our prayers for the victims and relief workers give them strength as they begin to rebuild. A gift in this special collection will assist those hurting today and build resources to offer immediate help to those affected by the next storm.”
