Pinkerton students pause to remember Lt. Paul DeMeo

The normal rush of activity at Derry's Pinkerton Academy came to a halt Wednesday morning as students lined the road for the funeral procession of U.S. Army 1st Lt. Paul DeMeo.

The 2007 graduate was the first cadet from the school's Air Force Junior ROTC program to attend a U.S. service academy. DeMeo, who graduated from West Point in 2011, died May 14 at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. Army officials are investigating and have not yet released his cause of death.

Howie Steadman, a retired Air Force colonel and director of the AFJROTC program at Pinkerton, gave the eulogy Wednesday. "Paul had such a bright future; he had the potential to be a general," Steadman said. "In reality, that can't happen, but in my mind, he will be a general." — Adam Swift
