Franklin Pierce ousted from NCAA Div. II baseball championship

Franklin Pierce’s 2013 baseball season came to an end with Wednesday’s 10-3 loss to Grand Valley State (Allendale, Mich.)in the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship in Cary, N.C.

Franklin Pierce took a 3-1 lead by scoring three times in the top of the third, but Grand Valley State scored five times in the bottom half of the inning before adding two runs in the sixth and two more in the eighth.

Shortstop Dan Kemp and second baseman Justin Brock each had two hits for the Ravens, who had nine hits in the game. Derry’s Zach Mathieu added a hit and two RBIs.

Grand Valley State freshman Patrick Kelly allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings to collect the win. Kelly improved his record to 8-3 and has a 2.34 ERA.

Kevin McGowan started for Franklin Pierce, but was pulled from the mound after he allowed four runs on five hits in 2 1/3 innings. The Ravens used six pitchers in the loss.

Franklin Pierce collected three hits in its three-run third. Two of those runs scored on Mathieu’s two-out double into the right-field corner.

Franklin Pierce, the East Regional champion, completed its season with a 37-19 record.

Infielder Kevin Zak had three of Grand Valley State’s 15 hits. The Lakers (37-18), who have three players hitting .328 or better in their lineup, are now 30-1 when leading after six innings this season.

Grand Valley State will face Tampa in today’s semifinals (3 p.m.).
