Goffstown wins in a softball tournament walk-off
GOFFSTOWN — Fourth-seeded Goffstown and 13th seed Pembroke Academy traded leads late in the game but the Grizzlies walked off with a 7-6 eight-inning win in the opening round of the Division softball tournament Wednesday.
“Wow. I think that anyone watching that game would have to stand back and just say ‘wow,’” said Goffstown coach Matt Fleming.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when Jen Cashin’s triple scored two Goffstown runs.
The Grizzlies held their 2-0 lead until the the top of seventh, when Pembroke unleashed a five-run barrage.
With two outs and two Spartans on base, Amanda Clement hit a double to drive home the tying runs. Then Pembroke added three more runs to lead 5-2 entering the bottom of the seventh. But the drama was far from over.
With two outs and runners on second and third, Goffstown’s Nicole Nanof hit a home run that bounced off the glove of Pembroke right fielder Meghan Smith made a play on the ball only to have it strike her glove and bounce out. That tied the game, 5-5.
Three batters later the game nearly ended when Goffstown’s Tess Barbaro hit a shot to left field with two runners on base. But a lunging catch by left fielder Emma Gagnon sent the game to extra innings.
Pembroke regained the lead in the eighth. Katherine Arvanitis hit a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice, and came home on another clutch hit by Amanda Clement.
“They played an awesome game,” said Pembroke coach Russ Saucier. “This is what a playoff should be.”
Goffstown, trailing again, tied the game when Hanna Gifford’s single scored pinch runner Nicole Ripley. Then, with the bases loaded, Haeli Campbell drove in Lindsay Lord with a walk-off base hit.
Fleming said he told his girls they could still win when they were down by three: “In the bottom of the seventh, I told them it’s not over. They got in there and did what they had to do.”
