Milfoil control at Elm Brook Park in Hopkinton

HOPKINTON — Sections of the beach at Elm Brook Park will be closed next Monday and Tuesday, June 3-4, while the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sprays to kill the milfoil plant, a weed that threatens the ecology of Hopkinton and Drew lakes.
..
Elm Park will remain open, but since no swimming will be allowed, no entry fee will be charged, although normal fees will be charged for picnic shelter reservations.

According to a state Department of Environmental Services fact sheet, milfoil is an invasive weed that takes over areas covered by plants that provide food and shelter for a variety of animals, birds and fish. It is not native to New Hampshire, but is believed to have entered the state by attaching itself to a boat or trailer brought to the state. It has the potential to kill wildlife and vegetation in the lakes.
..
A chemical herbicide known as CleanAmine will be used to kill the milfoil. It is approved by the federal Environmental Protection Agency and by the state.
