Red Sox rally in eighth inning to clip Cleveland
"Just trying to get a pitch I can put a good swing on," said Carp, who was in a 0-for-21 slide before hitting a three-run home run on Friday. "Left one out over the plate and got it off the wall.
Added Pedroia: "Their bullpen's really tough. I got in a hole there and was just trying to have a good at-bat and square a ball up, and got a pitch closer to me and it was up. So put a good swing on it."
"As a team today we just gave them extra opportunities and they took advantage," Indians manager Terry Francona said.
Lester went seven innings, throwing a season-high 124 pitches, including 81 strikes. He allowed four runs on a season-high 10 hits and eight strikeouts with one walk and a wild pitch.
"I thought he had better command of his curveball and his changeup. He was efficient. Really no hesitation of him going out in the seventh inning. Felt like that was his game."
"I thought he had to dodge traffic all day and make some really big pitches," Francona said. "They made him work from the first inning on but he continued to make pitches."
The Red Sox tied the game in the second. With two out, Jose Iglesias singled, took second on Kazmir's balk and scored on Ciriaco's single.
But after Lester hit Mark Reynolds with a pitch, Carlos Santana singled to score Swisher.
In the fourth, Iglesias' one-out double scored Daniel Nava, who walked to open the inning. They tied the score in the fifth, with Bryan Shaw in to relieve Kazmir. With the bases loaded, Jonny Gomes' sacrifice fly scored Iglesias.
But Boston's four-run eighth inning was the difference.
