Animal Rescue League names Volunteer of Year

BEDFORD - The Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire recently named Marie Kohler of Manchester its 2012 Volunteer of the Year.

The nonprofit animal shelter has just 22 paid staff members, so it says it relies heavily on its more than 400 volunteers, who do everything from cleaning cages to fostering shelter animals to staffing events.

To recognize those volunteers, the League created the award in 2004 - the organization's 100th birthday.

Plant sale, garden tour benefit animal shelter

MANCHESTER - The Friends of the Manchester Animal Shelter will host its seventh annual plant sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the shelter, 490 Dunbarton Road.

A variety of plants, including annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, shrubs and trees, will be for sale, with all proceeds benefiting the shelter.

The plants are donated by local garden clubs, businesses and gardeners. The Windham Garden Club also will host a raffle table.

Visitors are invited to tour the animal shelter and meet some of the animals available for adoption. If rain is steady, the sale will be rescheduled to the same time Sunday, June 2.

The group's third annual garden tour also is underway. Nancy Pratt has opened her 2½ acres of gardens at 59 Noyes Road in Londonderry to the public through Sunday, June 9.

Her gardens include azaleas, rhododendrons - many in colors not usually seen outside conservatories - Mountain Laurel, many varieties of perennials and a water feature inspired by the Monet gardens in France.

Tours are by appointment, but are available most times of the day, seven days a week. For an appointment, call 432-2336. The suggested donation is $10, with all of the donations to benefit the shelter. Parking is limited; a carpool is suggested.
