NHIAA Div. I Track: Lynch, North boys prevail
HAMPTON — Friday was a good night for Mike Lynch, but an even better night for the Nashua North boys' track and field team.
Lynch won two events to help North prevail in the Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Winnacunnet High School in Hampton.
Lynch, who will compete in both football and track and field at the University of New Hampshire, won the discus with a throw of 147 feet, 9 inches, and took first in the shot put with a distance of 49-10.
"Usually it's all about the distance," Lynch said. "Today it was all about the W. Personal stuff doesn't matter. It was all about the team win. Whatever I could do to help the team win, that's what I tried to do."
North sophomore Zakari Jenkins also won two events. He prevailed in the 100 meters (10.99 seconds) and the 200 (22.54).
Demitri Jackson finished first in the triple jump (43-05) and was North's other individual winner. The Titans earned 108 points.
The boys' pole vault was suspended because of rain and will be completed Tuesday (4 p.m.) at Winnacunnet. The outcome of that event will not affect North's first-place finish, but final team scores won't be determined until Tuesday. Either Bedford or Concord will finish second.
Bedford finished first in the girls' competition with 97.5 points. Londonderry placed second with 94.
The Bedford girls had four individual winners: Jenny Mara in the high jump (5-4), Amanda Ouellette in the long jump (101-9), Johanna Celli in the 100 meters (12.64) and Gwenyth Winship in the 800 (2:19.34).
The Bulldogs also prevailed in the 4x100 and the 4x400.
Bishop Guertin of Nashua's Betsy Garnick won the 100 hurdles (14.43), the 300 hurdles (45.64 ) and the long jump (17-11.75). She also ran third in the 100 (12.82).
Garnick's time in the 100 hurdles set a Division I record. She set the previous record (14.48) last year.
Garnick, who lives in Pelham, will compete in track and field at Northeastern next season.
"I'm very happy," she said. "I expected more from myself in the 100 dash, but I was tired coming off the hurdles and dash races (trials) . They were all back to back. I think it was just fatigue. It happens.
"Another goal was to get a good long jump in, and I did my best this season."
The North boys also won 4x100 relay, the 4x800 relay and ran second in the 4x400 relay.
"We didn't win during the winter and we should have, so we really needed to win here," Lynch said. "It was about the team today."
