Let the fun begin

White Mountain attractions launch unofficial start to season

The Mount Washington Cog Railway opened last weekend for its 144th season, bringing visitors from as far away as Russia to the summit of the Northeast's highest peak. This year, the Cog, based in Marshfield Station, will be offering new features including a Ride & Observatory Tour, Photo Workshop Tour and a Railfans' Day, as well as a “Name That Train!” contest for the new biodiesel engine. For information, log onto thecog.com or call (800) 922-8825 or 278-5404.

It's the weekend people set aside for planting, parades and personal reflections of those who helped pave the way for Americans' freedom to pursue such pastimes.

In the next few days, Memorial Day programs across the state will commemorate members of the military who gave their lives for their country, while making new memories with family and friends.

To that end, this weekend serves as an unofficial launch of the summer season, with attractions throughout New Hampshire opening their doors, including a host of sites in the White Mountains, which draws both day trippers and overnight visitors.

"Business over Memorial Day used to depend on good weather, but it seems people now use the long weekend to get a jump on the summer season regardless," said Jayne O'Connor, president of White Mountains Attractions.

The calendar lists the start of summer as Friday, June 21, but popular sites up north are ready for crowds.

Attitash Mountain Resort in Bartlett will have all of its summer attractions operating for its opening Saturday, May 25, and will be open weekends through June 9 and then daily beginning June 15.

The Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway opens on a daily basis starting Friday, May 24, while Clark's Trading Post, the Hobo Railroad and Loon Mountain, all in Lincoln, have their opening days set for Saturda, with weekend hours available through May and into early June. They will then be open daily throughout the rest of the summer months.

A little farther north in Jefferson, Santa's Village and Six Gun City open on Saturday as well, with full schedules coming on line in mid-June. Story Land of Glen initiates its 59th season on Saturday, with June 14 marking the start of daily hours.

Wildcat Mountain, with its zip line and gondola rides offering views of Mt. Washington, also opens Saturday. The Pinkham Notch will be open weekends through June 9, then daily beginning June 15.

And to check out the Northeast's highest peak, the Mt. Washington Cog Railway will run daily beginning Saturday, May 25.

Other major attractions in the White Mountains already open include the Conway Scenic Railroad, The Flume Gorge, Lost River Gorge & Boulder Caves, Mt. Washington Auto Road, Polar Caves Park and the Whale's Tale Water Park.
