Franklin Pierce to play Shippensburg in Div. II baseball World Series
Franklin Pierce University will face Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania in the opening round of the Division II NCAA Baseball World Series on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.
The Ravens (36-17) captured their sixth NCAA regional title on Sunday after beating Wilmington, Del., 5-1, at Penmen Field on the campus of Southern New Hampshire University.
Junior right-hander Trevor Graham, junior first baseman Zach Mathieu of Derry and sophomore third baseman Matt O’Herron were all named to the East Regional All-Championship Team.
Graham, who pitched a three-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts last Thursday against Wilmington and recorded the final out of Saturday night’s 13-inning win over the Penmen, was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
Shippensburg (32-21), seeded fourth in the Atlantic Region, posted 10-3 and 3-2 victories Sunday over No. 3 seed Seton Hill to advance to the College World Series for the first time since 2008.
The Ravens are three-time national semifinalists (2010, 2006, 2003) and are making their second trip to Cary (2010). FPU did not play Shippensburg during the regular season.
