Manchester police seek Food Mart robber

MANCHESTER — Police are searching for a man they say brandished a pipe as he robbed Han's Food Mart on Maple Street Tuesday night.

The robber entered the 353 Maple St. store about 10 p.m., went to the front counter and demanded money. When the clerk told him “No,” he pulled out a metal pipe and again demanded the cash, police said.
The clerk opened the register and the man reached into the drawer and took out $50 in cash. When he did, the clerk sprayed him with some pepper spray which police said had no affect on him.
The clerk then retrieved a knife to protect herself. The robber, after seeing the knife, smashed two jewelry display cases with the pipe and snatched seven necklaces from them. He fled the store with the cash and jewelry, heading east in the rear alley between Spruce Street and Lake Avenue.
Police said they recovered the pipe he dropped on the floor of the store.
The robber is described as a black man, about 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-8, 140 to 150 pounds and wearing a scarf or turtleneck over the lower part of his face, and a black hooded sweatshirt. There was no description of his pants or shoes.
The man also had a scar – maybe a cleft pallet, police said - on the left side of his face/mouth.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at 668-8711 or anonymously through the Manchester Crimeline at 624-4040.
