Pelham High nurse named School Nurse of the Year

PELHAM — Pelham High School’s longtime school nurse will be honored in Concord next month after being recognized as the state’s School Nurse of the Year.

Barbara Campbell, who learned of the honor in late April, will be further recognized at the New Hampshire Excellence in Education Awards (also known as the “ED-ies”) on June 8.

Campbell, who began her nursing career over 25 years ago, is often described by her colleagues as one who not only has a great sense of humor, but who also demonstrates true concern for her students and co-workers.

“As a professional and team player, Barbara’s relationships are marked by sincerity and openness,” Principal Dorothy Mohr said. “Her courteous and friendly manners have proven to be effective with people and create foundations for both respect and rapport.”

Mohr said she was just one of dozens of people in the district to recommend Campbell for the honors.

“Those numerous letters were nothing short of glowing,” Mohr added. “She’s clearly held in high esteem by her students, parents, teachers and administration.”

An advocate for student health, Campbell has spread her good works throughout the school through a number of programs, including education on breast and testicular self-exams for students.

A licensed American Red Cross instructor since 1989, Campbell also instituted a successful Weight Watchers at Work program in her district, and obtained state grants to begin staff programs promoting healthy choices and regular exercise.
