Fisher Cats’ win streak snapped by Portland

Matt Spring laced a two-out, three-run double in the seventh inning to lift the Portland Sea Dogs past the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5-3 in an Eastern League contest Tuesday before 2,415 fans at Hadlock Field.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Fisher Cats (23-23) while the Eastern Division-leading Sea Dogs (25-18) snapped a two-game losing streak.

New Hampshire starter Deck McGuire (2-4) suffered the loss. In six-plus innings, he allowed nine hits, four earned runs and three walks on 86 pitches. He fanned three.

Michael Almanzar belted a two-run homer in the first inning for Portland.

McGuire exited the game after allowing a lead-off single and walk in the seventh inning. Reliever Tyson Brummett retired the first two batters he faced, but walked Travis Shaw to load the bases. Spring followed with his bases-clearing double to left field.

The series continues tonight at 6.

Keith Couch (2-1) got the win in relief and Brock Huntzinger gained his ninth season save for the Sea Dogs.

The series resumes tonight at 6 p.m. with New Hampshire sending righty Ryan Tepera (4-3, 3.76) to the hill against Portland righty Matt Barnes (3-1, 4.62).
