Man seriously hurt in North Country crash of 1967 Porsche
DUMMER - A New York man suffered serious head injuries when his Porsche went off the road and hit a tree, state police Sgt. Dennis Wade said.
George Gates, 61, of Lloyd Harbor, N.Y., was driving his 1967 Porsche 911 south on Route 16 about 2:30 p.m. when he lost control on a curve and hit a tree, Wade said. Emergency responders used hydraulic cutting tools to get him out of the car and he was flown to Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine, where he was in stable condition Saturday night, Wade said.
Wade said speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash. The speed limit on that stretch of Route 16 is 50 mph, he said.
Wade said Gates appeared to be participating in a Porsche rally being held at the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods.
