NCAA Baseball: Penmen win again

The Southern New Hampshire University baseball team scored three runs in the third inning and that was enough for a 3-2 victory over Pace in Friday night's winners' bracket game in the NCAAA Division II East Regional at Penmen Field.

The Penmen scored their three runs by loading the bases. With Riley Palmer at bat, pitcher Mike Tamburino uncorked three successive wild pitches, allowing all three runners to score.

Jon Massad worked six innings for SNHU (35-17), scattering seven hits over seven innings. Powers pitched the final two innings for the save.

The Penmen, the only unbeaten team in the tourney, advanced to play tonight at 7 against the winner of today's first elimination game between Pace and Franklin Pierce at 11 a.m.

New Haven 3, Franklin Pierce 1: Ravens pitching was very good, fanning 15 New Haven hitters, but New Haven's was a little better. With the loss, sixth-seeded FPU dropped to 33-17. Third-seeded New Haven will also play an elimination game today, at 3 p.m., against top seed Wilmington (Del.), which eliminated second-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas, 8-1, in Friday's first game.

Franklin Pierce scored its run in the sixth, on an RBI double by Derry's Zach Mathieu.

The loss went to sophomore lefty Steve Hathaway, who allowed all three runs, three hits and fanned 11.

NCAA Division III
Wheaton 3, Daniel Webster 1: In Harwich, Mass., eighth-seeded DWC was eliminated in the NCAA Division III New England Regional. The Eagles finished 29-12 — the most successful season in school history.

Daniel Webster, 1-2 in the double-elimination tourney, was led by Devin DeCarteret of Pelham, who had a double and single.
