Nashua wine shop plans fundraiser for bombing victims

NASHUA — With a goal of raising $50,000, The Napa East Wine Lounge and Shop is hosting a fundraiser Sunday to benefit three local families victimized by the Boston Marathon bombings.

The money raised from the auctions, raffles and tickets sold for the event will be split among Jeff Bauman, a Mass. resident who works in Nashua and lost both his legs; Ron, Karen and Krystara Brassard of Epsom; who were all injured to varying degrees; and Celeste and Sydney Corcoran, a mother and daughter from Lowell, Mass., also seriously wounded in the blast.

Well aware that there are multiple fundraisers and funds being set up for bombing victims, Napa East owner and Nashua resident Jo Mahoney said she was still compelled to give local residents and businesses a chance to help out.

“I want it to be a positive, happy gathering for everyone involved. In fact, I just got word from some of the families that they may end up attending,” Mahoney said.

The impetus of the event was Mahoney’s neighbor, Coleen Durand, who personally knows the Brassard and Corcoran families and was looking for a way to help them out. Mahoney said she was happy to help, and that once the event gained some momentum, an employee at Napa East who works with Bauman at the Nashua Costco asked if he could be included.

“I haven’t met any of (the families), but I thought this would be good,” Mahoney said.

Durand, whose husband was the best man at Ron and Karen’s wedding, said she felt helpless finding out that people she and her husband had been friends with for years had been hurt.

“Medical bills are piling up for them, and we wanted to do whatever we could,” Durand said.

Before she went into surgery Monday to clean out an infection in her ankle, Karen Brassard said she was touched by all the local support she and her family have received. She mentioned the Napa East fundraiser as an example of how people closest to her have rallied around her family during their toughest time.

Durand said she was glad that after Brassard’s surgery Monday doctor’s put a cast on her leg.

“It will help her stay off her feet,” she said.

Durand said all the items that are going to be auctioned off during the event were donated by local businesses and residents after word of mouth about the event started to spread.

“A lot of vendors at Napa East have been very generous, and when the Sky Meadow Country Club (of which Durand is a member) found out they decided to help out as well,” Durand said.

During the event, which is scheduled to take place from noon to 8 p.m., actor and comedian Lenny Clarke and Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer Rico Petrocelli will be attending. Tickets cost $100, and include food and beverages, and access to a silent and live auction that includes items like an eight-person dinner with Lowell, Mass., boxing legend Micky Ward, Red Sox tickets, and tickets to NASCAR races.

Napa East Wine Lounge and Shop is located at 12 Murphy Drive, Unit B1, in Nashua.
