Two hurt in Epping crash involving bus, five other vehicles

EPPING - Two people were sent to the hospital Friday afternoon after a chain reaction crash on Route 125 involving a school bus and five other vehicles.

The accident happened just after 4 p.m. when a school bus owned by Safeway Transportation rear-ended a Toyota Prius while traveling south on the busy highway, according to Epping Police Officer Steve Soares.

The bus driver, identified as Jo-Anne Hall, 55, of Kingston, told police that she looked in her rearview mirror and then saw brake lights ahead of her. She hit her brakes as she turned to the right to avoid the vehicle in front of her, Soares said. The bus struck the back of the Prius operated by Scott Dumas, 48, of Merrimac, Mass.

The collision caused a chain reaction involving four other vehicles. They included a Cadillac DeVille driven by Gina Zafirakis, 24, of Manchester; a Subaru Outback operated by Elizabeth Currier, 27, of Palmyra, Maine; a Dodge Caliber operated by Dawn Raymond, 43,of Madbury; and a Nissan Altima driven by Patricia Cooper, 60, of Raymond.

Dumas, whose vehicle sustained the most damage, was transported to Exeter Hospital with back and neck injuries, Soares said.

Zafirakis was also brought to Exeter Hospital after suffering an arm injury.

The bus driver and the other drivers escaped without injury.

Soares said the bus wasn't carrying students at the time of the accident.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation by Epping police. No charges have been filed.

Epping fire and rescue personnel also responded to the scene of the accident, which caused significant traffic delays heading for evening commuters heading north and south.
