College Roundup: SNHU rolls in NCAA opener

HOOKSETT — Junior Mendez hurled seven shutout innings and his teammates struck quickly as the fourth-seeded Southern New Hampshire University baseball team ripped third-seeded New Haven, 9-0, in a Division II NCAA East Regional tournament baseball game on Thursday night at Penmen Field.

Mendez (9-3) struck out nine and allowed four hits. His nine wins tie the SNHU single-season school record set last spring by Tim Flight. David Gibson and Nashua’s Joe McCarthy each struck out the side to finish the shutout.

New Haven starter Henry Hirsch struggled with his control. He walked five batters in SNHU’s three-run first inning and left after recording just one out.

The hosts sent 10 men to the plate in a five-run fifth inning to break open the game.

Brendan O’Brien, Matt Boulter, Zach Goldstein and Andy Lalli had two hits each for the Penmen.

SNHU, 34-17, plays Pace tonight at 7. Pace blanked St. Thomas Aquinas, 3-0, in Thursday’s second game. New Haven, 33-15, meets Franklin Pierce today at 3 p.m.
