Chechen seeks McCain's help via Twitter

MANCHESTER — A former Chechen rebel living in Manchester, who was questioned by the FBI in connection with the Boston Marathon bombings, tried to reach out to U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., via Twitter in a series of nine tweets that call on McCain to "tell the truth about Russia and Putin's KGB."

Musa Khadzhimuratov, an aide to one of the leaders of the Chechen separatist movement, came to the U.S. in 2004 through a United Nations refugee program.

In his tweets, which he apparently hoped the Republican senator would see, he calls for help in obtaining citizenship, claiming he was unfairly classified as a terrorist by the Citizenship and Immigration Service.

The tweets, all posted on the same day using @SenJohnMcCain in the text, describe Khadzhimuratov's situation in his own words. Strung together, and correcting for grammar and spelling, they read as follows:

"Dear senator, why is all world so afraid to Mr. Putin? I'm from Chechnya and was shot by Russians; now I'm in a wheelchair.

"I came to the U.S.A. in 2004 as a refugee with my wife and two kids; I worked as bodyguard to Chechen Vice President during 1996-99 years.

"The U.S.A. government moved me and my family here as refugees but when we applied for green card my application was denied.

"USCIS (Citizenship and Immigration Service) now calls me a terrorist. I've lived here seven years; my SSI (Social Security Income) is cut.

"My family got citizenship, but I still live without any papers. Don't know if it was political or some other issue with USCIS.

"I don't have money for a lawyer to fix my case; I just can't understand one thing. Why did government bring us here and then separate my family? They made terrorist of me, and my wife and kids became American. What can I do in a wheelchair?

"My SSI is going to be cut, but INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service) doesn't care about it. I'm writing to you because only you can say true about Russia and Putin's KGB."

A link to the Khadzhimuratov Twitter account was forwarded to McCain's Washington office, which did not respond to requests for comment as of late Thursday afternoon.
