NH College Roundup: DWC baseball team begins NCAAs today

Daniel Webster College will face Southern Maine today at 1 p.m. in the opening round of the NCAA New England Regional baseball tournament in Harwich, Mass. The tournament will be played at Whitehouse Field, home of the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod League.

The Eagles (28-10), winners of the New England Collegiate Conference tournament, are making their second straight NCAA tournament appearance.

Southern Maine (37-7) won the Little East Conference tournament title and are the top seed in the tournament. Daniel Webster is seeded eighth.

The other six teams in the double-elimination tournament are second-seeded Wheaton, third-seeded Endicott, fourth-seeded Western New England, fifth-seeded MIT, sixth-seeded Saint Joseph’s (Maine) and seventh-seeded Salem State.

Wheaton is the defending regional champion, having finished as runnerup in the national tournament last season.

Honors

Plymouth State University: Three members of the baseball team, senior outfielder Steve Beard, senior pitcher Rew Wilson and junior shortstop Brandon Cox of Nashua, were named to the All-Little East Conference second team for the Panthers.

Keene State: The Owls placed two players on the All-Little East Conference baseball team. Junior Nick Vita, a second baseman from Spofford, was named to the first team. Greg Bates of Salem was a second team selection.

St. Anselm College: Andrew Messner and Jonathon O’Reilly captured New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-New England honors.

New AD

Daniel Webster College: Michael Diffily, president of the college, announced Tuesday the appointment of Chris Gilmore as director of athletics. Gilmore spent 18 years as director of athletics at Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vt.

He also served as men’s soccer coach at Green Mountain College and the College of St. Rose in Albany, N.Y.

Gilmore is a graduate of Plymouth State University and later earned a master’s degree from Eastern Illinois University.

Auffray signs

Kyle Auffray, a tight end and punter for the University of New Hampshire from 2008-10, signed a free agent contract with the Arizona Cardinals. He participated in the Cardinals’ rookie mini-camp this past weekend on a tryout.

Auffray played 16 games for UNH after beginning his collegiate career at Mississippi State (2006-07) as a quarterback.

As a senior in 2010, Auffray had four receptions for 34 yards and scored his first career touchdown on a 12-yard catch against Towson in his final home game at Cowell Stadium on Nov. 20.
