It was a little too big.Randee Martin, a member of the Derry Garden Club and its Civic Beautification chair, had a 30-year-old potted palm which had out grown her home on Dexter Street. She called Paul Jean at Pinkerton Academy who maintains all plantings at PA and asked if he could find a home for it in the new Academy Building.During April vacation, Jean came to the Martin home with another member of the ground crew. Together, they managed to get the 6-foot-tall, 7-foot-wide palm into a truck and into the arboretum at the entrance to the building.Martin, who is a substitute teacher at Pinkerton, said she is delighted that she will still be able to see her longtime friend that last winter had grown to the point that she and her husband, Roger, feared they might eventually need a machete to get into their living room. The palm now has plenty of room to grow.
