Spaulding softball stays red hot
BEDFORD - The list of teams that appear capable of winning this year's Division I softball tournament includes Dover, Concord, Timberlane and Salem. It should probably include Spaulding of Rochester as well..The Red Raiders lost three of their first four games, but made it seven victories in their last eight contests by beating Bedford, 5-3, Monday.
Spaulding collected 17 hits in the game, including four by senior catcher Ali Trueworthy..."We were a little lazy (early in the season)," Trueworthy said. "We were playing as individuals. We lost a couple games and we realized we had to pick it up and play as a team. Then we started hitting, and that definitely helped..."Teams should be scared of us. Absolutely."
Spaulding led, 3-0, through four innings and carried a 5-2 advantage into the bottom of the seventh. Bedford began to battle back when it received a two-run double from Ashley Abad in the fifth, and made it a two-run game when Kelsey Murphy singled in Kelly Woodmansee with two outs in the seventh...Spaulding freshman Kendall Stanton avoided further trouble by retiring Christina Bonfiglio on a grounder to short for the game's final out.
Spaulding's Sami West pitched the first six innings. She held the Bulldogs to three hits and struck out nine. The loss dropped Bedford's record to 8-5..."I really think they are a dangerous team," Bedford coach Derek Geddes said. "They can certainly hit the ball and their pitching was effective. There's not any one team in my mind that's going to dominate the field."..Bedford was without starting third baseman and No. 4 hitter Alex Haskell, who broke her thumb against Londonderry on Friday. Geddes said Haskell, a junior, is out for the season.
"For us moving forward it's finding out what we have to do with the lineup, and finding out what to do with our infield as we get ready for the tournament," he said...Spaulding lost to Concord in quarterfinals last spring, but Trueworthy said her team is planning to last a little longer in the postseason this year.
"We've figured out what we need to do to win," she said. "We're getting there. I just hope we keep going."..firstname.lastname@example.org..
