Manchester man faces attempted murder charges in barber shop shooting

MANCHESTER - A 23-year-old Manchester man was arrested for attempted murder Wednesday on warrants related to a November shooting in which a man sitting in a barber chair was shot three times in the leg.

Jesus Luis Rodriguez was arrested without incident by police.

The shooting occurred Nov. 29 at Andrew's Barber Shop, 262 S. Main St., Manchester. Two brothers waiting for haircuts as well as the barber were in the shop at the time and were not injured.

Police say Rodriguez is the man they say fired the gun eight times at Ismael Barreto, 40, striking him three times in the leg. According to witness accounts, the shooter shot at the man from a distance of approximately four feet and advanced on the victim, shooting at him as he jumped out of the chair and attempted to conceal himself from the shooter behind a wall.

Barreto was treated for the gunshot wounds at Elliot Hospital and later released.

At the time of the shooting, police said they believed two other men were in on the shooting, acting as lookouts for the gunman. Reports indicated a Hispanic man in his late 30s or early 40s entered and sat down to the left of the front door, when a second Hispanic man entered, but stood in the doorway - almost "blocking it," police said. He kept his right hand over his chest, as if he had a weapon inside his jacket. Then the shooter, also described as a Hispanic man, walked in with his face down and his head covered with a hoodie. He opened fire with a semi-automatic handgun, according to a report of the shooting.

Police said one round penetrated the wall all the way through to a neighboring apartment where no one was home at the time. The two brothers seated in the shop were threatened by the shooter who police say first pointed the gun at them before firing upon the victim.

Rodriguez is charged with attempted murder, two counts of felony criminal threatening, and two counts of felony reckless conduct. He was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in the 9th Circuit Court, Manchester District Division.
