NHIAA Boys' Lacrosse: Fast start helps Bedford to 31st straight win

BEDFORD - Bedford boys' lacrosse coach Matt Guerard says he likes keeping his Division II team sharp by playing programs from higher divisions. He may need to find something higher than Division I.

Guerard's Bulldogs came out scoring, jumping to a 5-0 lead after just seven minutes Wednesday in a 16-6 defeat of Division I Londonderry.

Guerard said he wanted his players to come out ready to play. "Our intensity had to be up from the start," he said. and they delivered. The Lancers did not get on the scoreboard until the 11-minute mark of the first quarter.

Tyler Sullivan had five goals and an assist, while Taylor Wallace added four goals for Bedford.

Brendan Wall was the top scorer for the Lancers with two goals.

Guerard didn't think the Lancers expected such speed from Bedford.

"I think it shocked them," said Guerard. "I don't think they were ready for our midfield speed or our ball movement."

Londonderry coach Joseph McCune admitted it was a challenge to contain the Bulldog attack.

Bedford controlled the play with a smothering defense, often forcing Lancer turnovers as they tried to break out of their zone. Several turnovers resulted directly to Bedford goals.

Londonderry is the third team from Division I Bedford has defeated this season. The team is now 12-0 and is on a 31-game winning streak from last season.

A team that wins as much as Bedford runs the risk of getting complacent but Guerard demands complete focus from his players.

"I told the guys I wanted 48 good, hard minutes. I think I got 42 so I'm very happy with that" said Guerard.

Guerard aims for his team to make the jump to Division I as soon as next year.

"We hope for next year. We're not exactly sure how the realignment will work out but we want to be in Division I," said Guerard.

The way they've handled themselves against D-1 teams this year, they should fit right in.
