NHIAA Baseball: Grizzlies bearing down

GOFFSTOWN - Who's the best NHIAA baseball team in Division II? You could certainly make a strong case for Goffstown.

The Grizzlies were alone atop the Division II standings entering Wednesday's game against Windham and remained there by posting a 14-1 victory in a game shortened to 4 ½ innings because of the 10-run rule.

Goffstown, which returned all but two players from a team that reached the Division II quarterfinals last season, raised its record to 12-1.

"They were the favorite going into the season," Windham coach Derek Lee said. "They have mostly everybody back. They have the most talent. Absolutely."

Windham, which began the day in sole possession of second place, fell to 8-2. Both losses came against Goffstown.

It was a 1-1 game after two innings, but Goffstown scored five runs in the third and eight in the fourth. Center fielder Chris Garrison did the most of the damage. He had two doubles, scored twice and drove in three runs.

"They're the best hitting high school team I've ever seen," Lee said. "Every ball is hit hard, even the outs. That's what's impressive.

"It was the first time all year that our pitching staff didn't throw strikes. When your pitching staff doesn't throw strikes it doesn't give you a chance."

Tyler Barss, who will pitch for the University of Rhode Island, improved his record to 3-0 by limiting Windham to two hits in four innings. Tyler Perron pitched a one-two-three fifth.

"These guys have played together for a long time," Goffstown coach Adam Lawrence said. "They're used to each other and they know how to play the game."

Zach Storro, Adam Routhier and Perron also had two-hit games for Goffstown. Connor Whittemore and Adam Dolan had Windham's two hits.

Goffstown has seven seniors on its roster. The only blemish on the team's record is a 6-4 setback against Pembroke Academy.

"They're playing well and they show up to play every day, which is nice," Lawrence said. "They have the same attitude in practice.

"Winning that championship game has been their goal from Day 1. Hopefully we get there."
