UPDATE: Ashland man dies after boat capsizes

CENTER HARBOR - An Ashland man died Monday after he was rescued Sunday morning by a canoeist who saw him treading water and then go under after his boat capsized on Lake Winona.

Spencer Hadlock, 66, was operating a 14-foot Sea Nymph, powered by a six-horsepower outboard motor, Sunday around 10:30 a.m.

Witnesses told New Hampshire Marine Patrol investigators that he reached back toward the motor from a seated position and fell overboard.

A person on shore saw him treading water for a short period of time and then go under the water.

The witness, who police did not identify in a news release, got a canoe and paddled to the area where Hadlock was last scene. By then, Hadlock was floating on the surface of the water, and the canoiest was able to get him to shore and perform CPR until emergency personnel arrived.

Hadlock was not wearing a personal flotation device.

He was taken to Lakes Region General Hospital and later transferred to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, according to police. N.H. Marine Patrol Sgt. Eric Robertson issued an update late Monday night indicating Hadlock died.
