Hooksett's catch: The bass that leapt into the boat

It was seven years ago this spring that Hooksett voters approved a Tax Increment Financing district off of Exit 11 and $18 million in bonds to lure a Cabela's store to town. Finally, Hooksett is to get its outdoor sporting goods megastore this November: A Bass Pro Shops. And the town did not have to give away anything to get it.

Bass Pro Shops has plans to move into the vacant Lowe's building off of Exit 10. If the plan reaches fruition, how wonderful it will be for the town and for outdoors enthusiasts.

By all accounts, Bass Pro Shops decided that the Lowe's store was a great site and contacted the town about obtaining it. That is what big, national businesses do. The idea that little towns need to lure them with lavish incentive packages is a conceit of small-town officials that is not supported by the evidence.
