DOVER - A 33-year-old man is in police custody after a nearly six-hour armed standoff at an apartment building, police Capt. Bill Breault said.
Breault said the man went to the 7 Lilac Lane of a woman he'd "formerly had a relationship" with about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday and was armed with a handgun. He said the woman did not let him into her apartment and called police, who found him in the hallway outside her apartment door.
Breault said early Thursday that police hadn't yet charged the man and said his name would be released when he is formally charged Thursday morning. He said the man is a resident of Dover, but not of the Lilac Lane apartment building.
Police evacuated the building, which has about 30 apartments, and "began communicating with the subject," Breault said. Police also called in the regional SWAT team and state police for assistance, he said.
Breault said police do not know what the man planned to do if he'd gotten into the apartment.
"We are still investigating the initial incident for intent," he said.
Breault said the man surrendered about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. There were no injuries, no force was used and no rounds were fired either by the man or police, he said.
"It was a completely peaceful resolution," Breault said.
