LANCASTER - An agency that specializes in providing assistance to New Hampshire residents, including helping them find a place to live at a reasonable rent, is preparing to open 20 units of affordable housing in Lancaster.
Southern New Hampshire Services will place the first of its new tenants - age 62 and older - in Ice Pond Village next month. The $3 million project got its start about five years ago when SNHS administrators identified Lancaster as a community "much in need of affordable rental housing for its seniors," the administrators said in a news release.
The one-bedroom apartments for single residents and couples offer 540 square feet of living space with a kitchen, bathroom, walk-in shower and closet space.
The homes are aimed at individuals with an annual income of about $24,000, and couples with a combined income of about $27,000, administrators said in the release.
Monthly rents are subsidized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and are designed to offer residents a payment well below market rate, according to administrators.
The building, on a six-acre site near Ice Pond, is also near the intersection of Routes 2 and 3, not far from downtown Lancaster.
The architect was David White of Goffstown, and Cheshire Builders of Swanzey was general contractor for the project.

Administrators say SNHS's goals include providing activities designed to assist low-income participants in their efforts to secure and retain meaningful employment, attain an adequate education, and make better use of available income.
