Low-income housing for seniors welcomed in Plymouth

PLYMOUTH - Pemi Commons, a 16-unit housing complex for low-income seniors, celebrated its opening and near-full occupancy Tuesday.

The complex at 230 Fairgrounds Road was built by Southern New Hampshire Services using federal Housing and Urban Development grant funds, said Phil Grandmaison, senior projects director for SNHS.

It is part of a larger $2.5 million project that includes another 16-unit complex in North Woodstock, which will open June 4.

The complex offers tenants, who must meet income guidelines and be over age 62, the opportunity to develop, own and manage their homes.

Qualifying low-income seniors pay 30 percent of their incomes to live in the apartments.

Each unit receives a subsidy from HUD so that SNHS is able to rent at far below market rate, Grandmaison said.

The apartments opened this winter, and 15 of the 16 were occupied in the first week.

"That gives an idea of the pent-up demand," he said.

The new facility has a front lobby, community room with kitchen and television, a library with a computer, and a central laundry.

Each of the one-floor, 550-square-foot units has a bedroom, kitchen, living room and bath, he said.

SNHS has built housing in Nashua, Manchester, Bristol, Rochester, Ashland, Portsmouth, Greenfield, Raymond, Northwood, Deerfield and Berwick, Maine, and recently completed a project in Campton near the Owl's Nest golf course.
