Pinkerton Academy in Derry to host Internet safety event

DERRY - The world of social media can be a scary place for children and parents alike. Entering information on one site can lead to a link where another site gobbles up more personal information until a person's entire identity is out in the open in cyberspace.

On Wednesday night at Pinkerton Academy's Stockbridge Theatre, Jennifer Frank of the Plymouth State University Police Department is offering a free presentation on Internet safety for parents, including how to monitor children's Internet use and social networking safety.

This will be the fourth time Frank, who is a special investigator for crimes against women at Plymouth State, will be at Pinkerton. Previously, she has addressed students and staff on the ever-changing world of Internet safety.

Pinkerton Associate Dean Wendy Depress said there are several reasons the school keeps inviting Frank back.

"The content of the program is so timely, with everyone still addicted to social media," Depress said. She said Frank is constantly updating her talks to give the latest information on how to stay safe on the Internet in general and social media sites specifically.

"I've seen her speak eight or nine times, and it has been different every time," Depress said. "There are so many takeaways. As a school administrator it is a beneficial program, and with children of my own, it has opened my eyes."

In addition to the information Frank provides, Depress said she does it in a way that keeps everyone interested and involved.

"She really opens people's eyes about how information travels in social media," she said. "In regard to her delivery parents, students, and staff have all said that she gets it. She engages folks and is humorous, realistic and current with the information she shares."

Frank's free presentation on Internet safety is Wednesday, May 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Stockbridge Theatre at Pinkerton Academy.

"I'd love to encourage parents to attend this and then talk about the information with their families after," said Depress
