Goffstown man charged with 2 counts of rape

GOFFSTOWN - A Goffstown man was arrested Monday and charged with two counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault stemming from an incident that occurred in 2012, police said.

James R. Hovey, 50, was arrested without incident at his home after a Hillsborough County grand jury returned two indictments, according to Detective Sgt. Kevin T. Laroche of the Goffstown Police Department.

Hovey is currently being held in the Valley Street Jail in Manchester until his arraignment. Laroche said he expects Hovey will be arraigned in Hillsborough County Superior Court either Wednesday or Thursday.

Laroche said Hovey was arrested after a lengthy investigation conducted by Goffstown police, and the charges against him stem "from a course of conduct over one night." Laroche said he presented the case to the grand jury April 18 and the indictments were returned April 29.

"This investigation took several months because a lot of things needed to be flushed out," said Laroche. "A lot of details needed to be vetted before we could bring the charges." When asked whether there was a relationship between Hovey and the victim, Laroche said, "This was not a stranger type of situation."

Laroche said Hovey has "been known to us in the past," adding that it's possible additional charges may be brought against him. He encouraged any individuals with additional information about Hovey to come forward. "I'm hoping it's not true, but I wouldn't be surprised if other victims come forward," he said.
