Car theft results in arrest for Windham man
Salem Police arrested William Szafran, 26, shortly before noontime on Thursday.
According to Deputy Chief Shawn Patten, police responded to reports of a vehicle stolen on Royal Circle earlier that day.
While the officer was speaking with the vehicle’s owner, the unidentified woman told police the car was being driven up the street as they were standing on the porch.
The vehicle was located in a nearby driveway before Szafran got out of the car and began running through backyards, ignoring officers’ orders to stop.
Salem K9 units responded, tracking Szafran through the area and apprehending him on Alta Avenue.
Szafran, who had an active electronic bench warrant at the time of his arrest, faces new charged of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, driving after suspension and resisting arrest.
He was released on $500 cash bail and awaits his court hearing. A date for the hearing hasn’t yet been set.
