Windham man charged in Salem car theft

SALEM - A Windham man faces multiple charges after allegedly stealing a car belonging to a friend's mother.

Salem police arrested William Szafran, 26, shortly before noon on Thursday.

According to Deputy Chief Shawn Patten, police responded to reports of a vehicle stolen on Royal Circle earlier that day. While the officer was speaking with the vehicle's owner, the unidentified woman told police the car was being driven up the street as they were standing on the porch.

The vehicle was located in a nearby driveway before Szafran got out of the car and began running through backyards, ignoring officers' orders to stop.

Salem dog units tracked Szafran through the area and apprehended him on Alta Avenue. Szafran, who had an active electronic bench warrant at the time of his arrest, faces new charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, driving after suspension and resisting arrest.

He was released on $500 cash bail and awaits his court hearing. A date for the hearing has not been set.
