Woman tied to UNH student murder case waives first court appearance

BRENTWOOD - The girlfriend of murder suspect Seth Mazzaglia has waived her first court appearance since being indicted on three charges alleging she attempted to thwart investigators' efforts to determine who killed Elizabeth "Lizzi" Marriott.

Katherine McDonough, 19, of Portsmouth is facing charges of witness tampering, hindering apprehension and conspiracy to commit hindering apprehension.

Defense lawyer Andrew Cotrupi filed paperwork to waive Thursday's arraignment in Rockingham County Superior Court. McDonough has been free on $35,000 bail since a brief jail stint following Dec. 24 arrest.

Indictments against Mazzaglia were made public on Wednesday and shed a few more details on how McDonough allegedly aided her boyfriend with covering up the Oct. 9 murder in Dover.

He is charged with alternative counts of first- and second-degree murder, and conspiracy to commit hindering apprehension. Prosecutors alleged that Mazzaglia and McDonough disposed of clothing, deleted text messages and helped concoct a false alibi of their whereabouts on the night of the murder, according to court papers. The couple is also accused of sending a text message to Marriott's phone, asking why she did not show up to Mazzaglia's apartment as planned.

Marriott, a University of New Hampshire sophomore, was either strangled or suffocated inside Mazzaglia's apartment, according to prosecutors.

Police believe the couple dumped Marriott's body somewhere in the Piscataqua River in Portsmouth. Marriott's body has not yet been found despite a massive search by local and federal authorities.
