Roger Brown's Diamond Notes: Longest game, NH style

Kyle Harvell's first game as Nashua North's varsity baseball coach will probably be the longest game he ever coaches. It took 14 innings and 15 days to complete.

The contest ended Monday afternoon, when Exeter scored in the bottom of the 14th inning and posted a 1-0 victory. The game began on April 8, but was suspended after 13 scoreless innings.

"Never experienced anything like this," Harvell said. "I've been involved in suspended games before, but nothing like a game that was scoreless after 13 innings. It was a special game and a lot of fun even though it didn't turn out the way we wanted."

Ethan Joyce collected the win for pitching six innings of relief (one on Monday). Joyce hasn't allowed a run in 13 innings this season.

Exeter prevailed when Nick Cilia's single scored Jameson Whitely from third in the 14th.

The game featured 110 at-bats, 16 hits and 38 strikeouts. Whitely, who led off the 14th with a double, had the only extra-base hit in the contest.

Both teams had an excellent chance to score before the game was suspended. North had runners on first and third with no outs in the ninth, and Exeter had the bases loaded with no outs in the 11th.

"It was a strange," Exeter coach Kevin McQueen said. "The pitching was great on both sides all the way through. It was the longest game I can remember."

GOING GREEN: Before the softball season began, Dover coach Tim Dudley told the media that he thought his team could reach the Division I championship game this season. So far, Dover has done nothing to prove him wrong.

Dover is off to a 5-0 start and has outscored its opponents, 51-10. The Green Wave will face their biggest challenge to date today, when they will play Salem at home. Salem is also 5-0, and has limited its opponents to five runs. Timberlane is the only other 5-0 team in Division I.

Dover finished 11-9 last season after losing to Salem in the Division I quarterfinals. Dover is seeking its first trip to the championship game since 2009.
