BEDFORD - A 19-year-old Deerfield man was arrested and charged with multiple felonies after police say he fled the scene of a car accident that resulted in injuries to three passengers. Police say he also broke into an unoccupied home on Buttonwood Drive early Wednesday.
Jeffrey Mason was arrested on Meetinghouse Road near the Route 101 ramp by a Hillsborough County deputy sheriff around 6:45 a.m.
According to reports, Bedford police officer Thomas McAuliffe attempted to stop a vehicle that was being driven erratically at the intersection of Liberty Hill and Meetinghouse roads around 12:15 a.m. Wednesday. Police said the driver refused to stop and drove north on Liberty Hill Road at a high rate of speed before crashing into a telephone pole and stone wall.
Police said the driver fled the crash scene and left behind three injured passengers, one of them seriously hurt. Two of the passengers were ejected from the car, and one passenger suffered serious head trauma, police said. The names of the injured passengers were not released.
Immediately after the crash, Bedford police and a state police K-9 unit began looking for the driver. At about 3:30 a.m., the police station received notice of a burglar alarm going off at an unoccupied home on Buttonwood Drive. When police responded, they determined that the home had been broken into.
Mason was arrested after he was spotted by a state police trooper near the Route 101 ramp. The trooper notified a Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy who was nearby.
Mason was charged with conduct after a motor vehicle accident, driving while intoxicated, reckless conduct, disobeying an officer and burglary - all felonies. He was also charged with resisting arrest, a misdemeanor.
In addition, police said, they are investigating an underage drinking party connected with the Wednesday morning crash and police chase.
Police said the case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is urged to call Bedford Police at 472-5113.
