Humane Society of Greater Nashua earns award

NASHUA - The Humane Society for Greater Nashua was presented with the 2013 Gate City Light Award on Tuesday.

The Mayor's Volunteer Recognition Committee has selected the Humane Society for its annual award in coordination with National Volunteer Week, which is underway.

The award honors the Humane Society for Greater Nashua, along with its volunteers, for "generously sharing their time in the spirit of community and giving," according to a resolution approved by the Board of Aldermen.

The resolution goes on to say that each year hundreds of volunteers contribute thousands of hours to support the Humane Society by working with staff, caring for pets, fundraising, providing in-home foster care and serving on the Board of Directors.

"The Humane Society for Greater Nashua remains dedicated to the creation and maintenance of a responsible and humane two- and four-footed community," the resolution states.

On Tuesday, representatives from the Humane Society were officially presented with the Gate City Light Award during a Board of Aldermen meeting.

"We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for our volunteers. We would not survive without their help," said Douglas Barry, new executive director of the Humane Society for Greater Nashua.

Barry said he has 80 regular volunteers who help with daily duties at the shelter, and a pool of about 700 volunteers throughout the year who help clean cat cages, take dogs for According to officials, more than 2,300 pets are cared for by the city's Humane Society each year. Nashua has the second busiest shelter in New Hampshire.

The Gate City Light Award is given to agencies and volunteers who make significant contributions to the people of Nashua.

The Humane Society was credited with creating lifelong friends, companions and relationships that mutually benefit pets and people, and its volunteers were honored for sharing a passion for animal welfare through a rewarding and productive volunteer experience.
