NH Senate passes expanded sports concussion legislation

CONCORD - State lawmakers did not wait long to expand a new law requiring school districts to develop guidelines for dealing with concussions.

The Senate Thursday passed House Bill 180, which changes the definition of "student-athlete" and "student sports" under the new program.

The current law requires school districts to distribute information on the risk and nature of concussions to coaches, students, athletes and their parents.

Under the law, a student-athlete who shows symptoms of a concussion or who a coach, trainer or other party suspects has sustained a concussion must be removed from a game or practice. The student can then return to action only with the permission of a health-care provider.

Under HB 180, the age range for student-athletes would include grades 4 through 12, rather than the current 9 through 12. In addition, the definition of "student sports" would be expanded to include intramurals as well as interscholastic athletics.

The bill is now before Gov. Maggie Hassan.
