Dessert in demand to benefit bombing victim

BEDFORD - Phones have been ringing off the hook since the Bedford Village Inn announced a fundraiser to support Jeffrey Bauman, who was injured in the Boston Marathon bombing.

A photo showing Bauman, 27, being wheeled to an ambulance shortly after the blasts brought home the horror of the attack that killed three people and injured more than 170 on Patriots' Day. Bauman had been standing at the finish line when one of the bombs exploded. He was saved largely due to the efforts of bystander Carlos Arrendondo, 53, who applied a tourniquet to control the bleeding. Bauman's legs were later amputated below the knee.

Bauman is a Chelmsford, Mass., resident with ties to the Granite State. He works at the Costco on Daniel Webster Highway. His stepmother, Csilla Bauman, was the restaurant manager at the BVI for 15 years.

The inn has been deluged with calls and emails since announcing it will dedicate this weekend's sales of its chocolate signature dessert to Bauman. A Facebook post announcing the fundraiser spread across the Internet. All proceeds of the dessert through Sunday will be put toward Bauman's medical expenses. "It's really popular," said Amelia Berube, front desk service representative. "We're getting a lot of response to it."

The bake staff spent most of the day preparing the dessert, which sells for $11. Berube estimates they may have sold about 100 desserts already. They've been unable to honor requests for takeout because each batch takes about four hours. The staff hopes to have a system in place to handle takeout orders by this weekend. Costco employees lined up to spell out Bauman's name in front of the Nashua location and posted the photo on the company's Facebook page under the heading "this is our hero." Bauman's father, also named Jeff, posted his thanks along with an update on his son's condition. The younger Bauman "was in the wrong place at the wrong time" he said.
