'Walk for Boston' planned for Newport Friday night
NEWPORT – “A Walk for Boston” is planned for tonight at the Newport High School track.
The community event was started by Steve Smith at the WCNL radio in Newport, but has quickly snowballed drawing in people from outside the town, said Cindy Gallagher who works at the high school.
The event is planned to begin at 6 p.m. and continue till 8:15 p.m., Gallagher said.
People from the Claremont and Colby-Sawyer community in New London are also planning to attend the event that will include a walk that begins at 6 p.m., then a candle light vigil and bagpipe performance at 8 p.m.
People are asked to give a show of support for the city of Boston by wearing a Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins or Celtics wear if they can.
Donations for One Fund Boston -- http://onefundboston.org -- will also be collected at the event.
“It’s also about a community uniting to say we say we care about other communities,” Gallagher said.
“It can be a walk. it can be a run or it can be just come and play on our football area.. …I think this is gogin to be a big thing. Rain or shine we’re doing this tonight.
