CONCORD - Attorney and former state Sen. Joe Foster of Nashua was unanimously confirmed as New Hampshire's Attorney General Wednesday, succeeding Michael Delaney, whose term ended March 31.
Executive Councilor Debora Pignatelli, also of Nashua, said Foster was the subject of a "good and fair hearing" last week.
"I believe he will go on to head the Department of Justice in a manner that we can be proud of," she said.
Foster is a managing partner at the McLane Graf law firm in Manchester. During the public hearing, Foster said he will recuse himself from any matters involving clients of his former law firm "for a period of time." He also said his lack of criminal justice background will not hurt his service, as he will often be in communication with his bureau chiefs, including the chief of the criminal justice bureau.
Overall, he received positive reviews at his hearing.
Foster's term heading the state Department of Justice began upon confirmation. His salary grade is listed on Executive Council documents as $116,170.
Gov. Maggie Hassan said in a statement after the confirmation vote, "As we saw throughout the confirmation process, Joe Foster is a greatly respected attorney and public servant whose broad experience and excellent judgment will be invaluable as New Hampshire's chief legal and law enforcement officer.
"I have worked closely with Joe, and I know that he will steadfastly defend the cause of justice for the people of New Hampshire at every turn. I applaud the Executive Council for confirming Joe Foster and look forward to working with him again to ensure safety and justice for all the people of the Granite State," Hassan said.
Foster, 53, had been with the McLane Graf law firm for nearly 29 years specializing in business and bankruptcy law.
A Democrat, he is a former chairman of the state Senate Judiciary Committee and is also a former member of the House.
He resides in Nashua with his wife and has two daughters.
