Timberlane ace stifles Pinkerton

PLAISTOW - The Pinkerton Academy baseball team received an outstanding pitching performance from Andrew Herlihy on Monday, but the effort turned in by Timberlane of Plaistow starting pitcher Jake Damphousse was even better.

Damphousse, a junior, held Pinkerton to three hits and struck out seven to earn the win in Timberlane's 3-0 victory.

Damphousse, who had a 7-0 record last season, didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning, when Ryan Day led off with a sharp single to right field.

"We have not hit the ball very well so far this year," Timberlane coach Jamie Fish said. "We didn't exactly tear the cover off it today, but we got a great pitching performance and we did enough to win."

Timberlane, which was coming off one-run losses against Spaulding of Rochester and Merrimack, raised its Division I record to 1-2. Pinkerton is also 1-2.

Herlihy surrendered six hits and struck out five in six innings. He held Timberlane scoreless until the Owls picked up three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth. Matt Grant scored the only run Timberlane would need when he raced home from third on a suicide squeeze executed by Pat Mahoney.

"When you're not hitting the ball you have to generate some offense any way you can," Fish said. "It's been a good play for us in the past."

The Owls added to their lead when freshman catcher Tyler Cameron hit a two-run double that scored Justin Pasters and Mahoney.

"I figured they'd pick me up sooner or later," Damphousse said. "I had confidence in them. The adrenaline coming off the runs in the sixth really helped me. I felt really strong (in the seventh)."

Pinkerton had the tying run at the plate in the top of the seventh, but a strikeout and a double play ended the threat.

"Andrew threw the ball great," Pinkerton coach Steve Campo said. "He's our number one and we expect performances like that from him, but their pitcher was great. You have to tip your hat to a pitching performance like that."
