SNHU vaults into first place; Dartmouth cruises

The Southern New Hampshire baseball team is back in first place.

The Penmen, behind Jon Massad's pitching, handed Merrimack College a 4-2 defeat on Sunday in Manchester. The victory enabled SNHU to sweep the three-game weekend series improve to 8-3 in the Northeast Division of the Northeast-10. SNHU is 18-12 overall.

Massad went 8 2/3 innings and allowed three hits and a pair of unearned runs in the ninth inning. He fanned six.

Alex Powers notched his second save.

Michael Mastroberti led the Penmen offense by going 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Dartmouth 7-7, Brown 0-2: The Big Green completed a 4-0 home weekend sweep of the Bears with a pair of brilliant pitching performances. On Sunday, Mitch Horacek tossed a five-hit shutout in the opener, while Michael Johnson went the distance in the nightcap, permitting only five hits.

Offensively, Joe Purritano had a weekend to remember. The freshman from Woodcliff Lake, N.J., went 9-for-14 with a double, triple, four homers, 10 RBIs and five runs scored.

Dartmouth improved to 22-6 overall, 8-4 in the Ivy League.

Bentley 5, Franklin Pierce 1: Bentley's John Yohe scattered six hits in a route-going performance on the hill. FPU, which dropped to 6-3 in the Northeast Division of the NE-10 (23-12 overall), scored its run when Derry's Zach Mathieu walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly.

Plymouth State 10-13, Lyndon 4-1: In Plymouth, senior Steve Beard collected five hits on the day, including two triples and three runs batted in. Justin Walsh of Goffstown and Brian Thompson both had two hits in each game.
