Dead cat found in backpack in Londonderry pond

LONDONDERRY - Police are investigating reports of animal cruelty after a local teenager discovered a dead cat inside a backpack that was floating in a pond on Hall Road Monday afternoon.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m. Monday, police interviewed a local teen and his mother after the boy reported he'd found the backpack while walking in a wooded area earlier that day.

Police Officer Daniel Hurley said the backpack, which was partially submerged in a pond about a half mile from a railroad bed, had been filled with rocks and a decomposed white cat.

Hurley said the animal's poor condition and the tattered backpack indicated that both "had been submerged for an extended period of time."

Lt. Tim Jones said that as of now, police have no leads as to how the cat might have gotten there.
