Car left behind store for two days leads to drug arrest in Salem

SALEM – A complaint about a suspicious car being parked behind a convenience store for two days led to the arrest of two people Thursday on felony drug charges, police said.

The driver, George Pappargeris, 41, of Salem and his passenger Amie Viera, 29, of Methuen, Mass. were arrested shortly after 9:27 p.m. on Thursday after being questioned by police.

Pappargeris was charged with transportation of drugs. Viera faces charges of possession of a controlled drug (heroin).

A manager from a Circle K store, located at 242 N. Broadway, complained to police that a silver Chevrolet Cavalier with Maine registration had been backed in near the outdoor vacuum, police said.

Store management told police that the car had been parked in the same spot at on the south side of the store for two days in a row.

When police officers arrived on the scene, they saw a man in the driver?s seat and a woman inside the car. They questioned the couple and spotted drug paraphernalia in plain sight, according to police Sgt. Michael Kelly.

Officers were allowed by the couple to search the car and found a small quantity of heroin along with the paraphernalia, according to police.

Pappargeris and Viera were taken into custody without incident, police said.

The Chevrolet Cavalier was towed back to the Salem Police Department while police applied for a search warrant to look for additional contraband, police said.

Pappargeris and Viera were arraigned at 10th Circuit Court in Salem on Thursday afternoon. Pappargeris was released on $1,000 personal recognizance bail. Viera was held on $750 cash bail. She was transported to the Rockingham County jail in Brentwood.

Both drug charges are felonies, punishable by up to 3 ½ to 7 years in state prison.
