Goffstown transfer station fire put out quickly

GOFFSTOWN - A fire at the transfer station Tuesday morning was quickly extinguished by firefighters who responded to the Back Road facility shortly after the call came in at 8:55 a.m.

Goffstown Fire Chief Richard O'Brien said workers at the transfer station called the fire department after noticing smoke coming from the packer building and an adjacent trailer where trash that has been compressed in the building gets deposited.

O'Brien said an assessment of the building will be made to determine if there was any damage. "Some hydraulic, mechanical components took some heat, so will look to see if there was any damage," O'Brien said. "But the fire was mostly contained to the trailer where they offload the garbage."

The packer building is where the trash that gets picked up roadside gets deposited. It's also where residents drop off their household trash for disposal. "We suspect that it was some kind of material that was burning" either from the roadside pickup or from a load someone had delivered to the transfer station, O'Brien said.

The fire was brought under control by about 9:45 a.m. O'Brien said Goffstown received mutual aid from New Boston, Dunbarton and Weare.

"There were no injuries, just a big mess to contain" O'Brien said.
