BEDFORD - A detached garage at a Danforth Drive home burned to the ground in an overnight fire.
Fire Capt. Kevin Murray said a popping sound woke homeowner Ginger Allen about 1:45 a.m. Monday. She looked out a window of her 10 Danforth Drive home to see the garage in flames.
Allen quickly woke her son and they, together with their pets, made it safely outside and to a neighbor's house where 911 was called.
Murray said fire crews were on the scene four minutes later, but the garage was completely in flames.
"Most fires double in size every 30 seconds," Murray explained.
Firefighters from Goffstown and Manchester arrived to help extinguish the blaze, while Amherst firefighters provided station coverage.
The 16-by-24-foot garage, built in 2007, was destroyed as was all its contents, including a motorcycle, snow blower, lawn tractor and generator. The heat from the fire melted siding on the home, which is about 25 feet away from the garage, Murray said.
He estimated damage at between $15,000 and $20,000.
Murray said investigators have not determined the cause but do not believe it is suspicious.
